An increasing amount of depression patients have turned to suicide as a result of side effects from the use of anti-depressant drug Paxil, over the past few years.

While Paxil can be effective in curing depression and panic disorders, in some people it can induce suicidal thoughts and tendencies. GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer, warns of suicide risk in their user guidelines.

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry urges medical practioners to examine the changes and conditions in patients who have been taking Paxil.

In fiscal 2004, one person committed suicide as a result of Paxil side effects. The number has incrased to 11 in fiscal 2005 and grew to 15 the following year.

Experts say the increase is partly due to doctors failing to examine patient conditions after administering the drug to them while the number of patients being prescribed Paxil has increased.
