The FDA has announced a request to the manufacturers of all antidepressant medications to update the "black box" on their labels to include warnings about the increased risks of suicidal behavior and thinking in young adults ages 18 to 24.

The new labeling will also point out scientific data does not show increased risk in adults that are older than 24 and that adults ages 65 and over taking antidepressants have a decreased risk of suicide. The new warning statements will pointedly emphasize that depression and other disorders are the most important cause of suicide and suicidal behavior.

Drug manufacturers will have thirty days to submit revised labels and revised medication guides to the FDA for approval.
