Paxil Maker Accused of Obscuring Suicide Risks
Category: Paxil Suicide
According to court documents recently released to U.S. lawyers seeking damages for clients allegedly harmed by the antidepressant medication, Paxil, drug manufacturers may have know about an increased risk of suicide associated with the medication as far back as 1989. GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Paxil, finally issued a warning for an increased risk of suicide in 2006. An analysis of early clinical trials for Paxil suggests that GSK employees included extra suicides in the placebo side of the trial to intentionally skew the results of the trial in favor of Paxil. Valentine's Day Massacre Reignites SSRI-Violence Debate
Category: Paxil Suicide
On February 14, 2008, Valentine's Day, Steven Kazmierczak opened fire on the campus of Northern Illinois University. Kazmeirczak managed to kill five and injure 17 others before turning the gun on himself. There is speculation as to what drove the 27-year old to commit such a heinous act, but some believe the violent episode could have been triggered by withdrawal symptoms from the popular antidepressant medication Prozac. Kazmeirczak's girlfriend claims that Steven quit taking Prozac about three weeks before the massacre. Some experts believe the intense withdrawal experienced by some when stopping selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) therapy could have been a major contributor to the violent actions that shocked the country earlier this month.

Senator Probes Paxil Suicide Cover-up

Senator Charles Grassley as part of an ongoing investigation of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and their questionable business practices has launched a probe on allegations that the company knew about suicide risks associated with Paxil some 15 years before a warning was added to the label. The pharmaceutical giant officially added warnings for increased suicidal behavior in young adults in 2006 but may have known about this link as far back as 1989. After reviewing dozens of internal documents, Dr. Joseph Glenmullen concluded that GSK improperly added reports of suicide to the placebo group of trial in order to create less of a disparity between the two groups.
