British pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has been accused of misleading patients and covering up clinical studies that showed the dangers of their drug Seroxat, known as Paxil in the U.S. Attorneys on behalf of those who claim to be injured by this dangerous drug have filed over 600 writs with plans for more on the way. Each of these claims is seeking up to £50,000 in compensation. GlaxoSmithKline could easily be facing claims up to £30 million before all is said and done, still a drop in the bucket for a company that makes a billion pounds each year from Seroxat alone.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4172482.stmUnited States attorneys have been pursuing similar litigation in the U.S. Paxil has been linked to an increased risk in suicidal ideation, severe withdrawal symptoms, and life-threatening birth defects among other ailments. The drug was banned in both the U.S. and England in 2003 due to an apparent increased suicide risk in adolescents. There have been harsh allegations that GSK hid evidence of this link to increase sales. Thousands also insist that withdrawal symptoms from Paxil are absolutely unbearable can cause aggression and even psychotic actions.
GlaxoSmithKline maintains that Seroxat has benefited millions of people and that the medication is not defective. They therefore acknowledge no merit in this litigation.
