Mixing over-the-counter medications, herbs, supplements and prescription drugs can be prove to be dangerous to your health.

Many people are under the misguided belief that if a medication doesn't require a prescription, it must be safe. This is untrue and can have life threatening side effects from mixing of drugs, according to Dr. George Grossberg of Saint Louis University and author of "The Essential Herb-Drug-Vitamin Interaction Guide."

For instance, if a patient is taking the all natural herb St. John's wort for anxiety or depression, they should not mix it with antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications such as Paxil, Prozac or Zoloft as it may cause serotonin syndrome.

It is best to always check with your medical doctor prior to taking over-the-counter or herbs while taking prescription medications.
