Two new studies show evidence that suggests men and women that take selective serotoni reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a class of antidepressants that include: Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft, are at risk for increased bone loss.

The studies released by scientists at Oregon Health & Science University and San Francisco, Minneapolis, San Diego and Pittsburgh have found that elderly men taking the so called SSRIs had lower bone mineral density and that elderly women had an increased rate of yearly bone loss.

Additionally, the studies found that use of another popular class of antidepressants, know as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), were not associated with increased bone loss in men and women. TCAs include drugs such as amitriptyline (Elavil), doxepin (Sinequan,) despiramine (Norpramin) amongst others.

These findings should, give patients and doctors a reality check reminding them that antidepressants affect all body systems, not just brain chemistry.
