A new documentary about antidepressants is set to air on the Independent Film Channel on Monday night. The documentary is entitled, "Does Your Soul Have a Cold?" and focuses on depression and antidepressant use in Japan. This is a relatively new concept in eastern society and the title of the documentary was actually the slogan that GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Paxil, used when they first introduced their product to Japan. They used this slogan to give people a better conception of what it means to be depressed and therefore try antidepressants to help with it.
The documentary is 83 minutes long, and explores the lives of five Japanese individuals, three men and two women. It provides an in depth look at their dependency and the lifestyles that they have been drawn into by their depression and antidepressant use. The documentary primarily allows the viewer to see the horrible side effects and dependency issues that surround powerful prescription antidepressants, like Paxil.
They're an interesting bunch. Mika is a pretty woman in her 20s who delivers medical supplies for a living. She has been depressed for about five years. After she tried to hang herself (only a stroke of luck saved her from death), she began taking Paxil, among other medications. She is better than she used to be, but is now deeply addicted to the drugs. No longer is she "fighting the depression," she says -- she's "fighting the antidepressants."
Its looks to be a very intriguing look into a world that many know little about, and others know all to well.
