Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline is being sued by over 300 patients in the U.K. claiming that it was extremely difficult to stop using the popular antidepressant Seroxat, marketed as Paxil in the U.S. The lawsuit seeks between 15 and 50 thousand pounds for each plaintiff. The plaintiffs' attorneys claim that GlaxoSmithKline was negligent and qualifies for breach of duty due to the lack of sufficient warnings for Seroxat.

GlaxoSmithKline is also the target of more than 4,000 lawsuits in the U.S., combined in a federal court in Los Angeles, that allege Paxil users suffered withdrawal symptoms. While Harvey said he was aware of the U.S. lawsuits, the U.K. action is separate.

Some have described withdrawal symptoms from Seroxat to absolutely unbearable. Psychological melt down and feelings of electrical shocks in the brain, known as "zaps," are not uncommon amongst those attempting to quit taking Seroxat.

GlaxoSmithKline has responded to the allegations and does not seem to be too threatened by the lawsuit.

"We believe there is no merit in this litigation,'' GlaxoSmithKline said in an e-mailed statement today. "Seroxat has benefited millions of people worldwide who have suffered from depression."

The case will likely be drawn out for several years and it will be a long while before there is any real closure for these plaintiffs.
