Three years ago when GlaxoSmithKline settled a lawsuit with the State of New York over the antidepressant medication Paxil, they agreed to something unusual: publicly disclosing the results of their clinical trials for Paxil and other drugs.
The company, whom was criticized at the time for failure to publicize all pediatric Paxil trials, not only positive findings, made good on that promise. The first posting on the new site was about 65 studies that involved GSK's diabetes drug, Avandia.
This week GSK is learning what that greater disclosure could mean for them.
A cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, stumbled onto GSK's site while researching the drug Avandia. He and a collegue then analyzed the data last April. On Monday, The New England Journal of Medicine released their findings that Avandia posed an increase in heart attacks.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out for GSK and what this means for future clinical studies for Paxil and other drugs. Finish reading the full article here.
