The Food and Drug Administration has been under heavy criticism lately for its drug approval procedure. This is a result of serious adverse effects associated with medications, like Vioxx and Paxil, that were approved on the fast track. In 1998 the FDA instituted the Adverse Event Reporting System. This is a program designed to collect all adverse drug events that are reported to the FDA or drug manufacturers. Analyzing the collection from the time of induction through 2005, reveals some startling characteristics about adverse reactions.
From 1998 to 2005 the number of reported serious adverse events increased by 250 percent, while fatal adverse events increased by 270 percent. Reported adverse events increases four times as fast as the number of prescriptions being written, that is astonishing.
These data show a marked increase in reported deaths and serious injuries associated with drug therapy over the study period. The results highlight the importance of this public health problem and illustrate the need for improved systems to manage the risks of prescription drugs.
