Several lawsuits against the makers of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) have been scheduled for jury trials in 2008. These lawsuits allege that companies like GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Paxil, and Pfizer, the makers of Zoloft, failed to provide adequate warnings of potential side effects associated with their antidepressant medications.
At least a dozen trials have will be moving to trial over allegations that GlaxoSmithKline concealed clinical trial results that suggested suicidal tendencies were increased by Paxil. Many lawsuits also claim that drugmakers overstated the efficacy of SSRI's while hiding serious side effects from the public over the past 20 years.
Just last week the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine published an article claiming that the efficacy of antidepressants has been grossly overstated in published reports. Experts believe that by reading medical journal articles physicians would gain the impression that these are 50 per cent more effective than they actually are.
This year will be a trying time for many drug companies as high profile cases reach the jury trial stage and once confidential internal information reaches the public.
