It was reported Friday that a woman from British Columbia had launched a class-action lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of the much talked about antidepressant Paxil. She alleges that GSK did not provide adequate warnings about the dangers of birth defects associated with taking Paxil during pregnancy.
The woman, Kate Bennison, gave birth to her daughter Sophia in 2005, the same year that the FDA issued a warning about link between Paxil and birth defects. Sophia was born with a hole in her heart that required hours of painful surgery and the lawsuit claims that her condition was caused of contributed to by Kate's use of Paxil during her first trimester.
The action must be certified before the case can be pursued any further. A writ has been filed against GSK and the company has been allotted two weeks to respond to the writ. Paxil has also been linked to an increased risk of suicide and the company has faced harsh criticism for it's deceptive marketing practices and hidden clinical trial results.
