The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Boston University's Slone Epidemiology Center have long term studies that focus on the link between mothers' medications and birth defects.

The study focuses on SSRIs, such as Paxil, during pregnancy.

The study compared mothers of 9,622 babies born with birth defects and 4,092 babies born without any defects. In short, the study found no significant link between SSRI use in early pregnancy and birth defects.

However, researchers did notice roughly 2 1/2 times more cases of three relatively rare types of birth defects in babies born to mothers using SSRIs. The studies need to be confirmed by further studies.

Research did show increased risks for certain SSRIs and birth defects in Paxil users.
