Paxil appears to increase the risk of certain birth defects in babies born to mothers that were taking the antidepressant during their first trimester of being pregnant.
Depression is quite common during pregnancy and approximately 10 percent of women suffer with the condition. In most cases it is often treated with selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs such s Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft.
The safety of SSRI use during pregnancy is a controversial topic at best. Some studies suggest babies born to mothers whom took SSRIs during pregnancy may have temporary withdrawal symptoms.
Data from two studies suggests babies born to mothers who took Paxil early on in the pregnancy are 1 ½ to 2 times more likely to be born with a heart defect.
