A new study discovered that over 11 million women of childbearing age are using prescription drugs that are unsafe during pregnancy, each year.

These drugs include the popular antidepressant drug Paxil amongst others.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies drugs into five main categories based on safety during pregnancy:

Class A and B show no evidence of harm while pregnant. There is insufficient evidence on Class C drugs and pregnancy. Class D drugs are considered to be potentially harmful to pregnant women but the benefits outweigh the risks.

Class X drugs should not be taken in any form by pregnant women. Class X drugs include drugs used to lower cholesterol.

Researchers studied half a million women of childbearing age and discovered that one in six had used a potentially dangerous drug during pregnancy.
