Paxil Linked to Premature Birth Risk

Category: Paxil News

A new study has linked antidepressant use during pregnancy to an increased risk of premature birth. Premature birth can be accompanied by a slew of health problems for the newborn. Antidepressants like Paxil and Zoloft, known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs, have also been linked to birth defects when taken during the first trimester. Studies have also suggested that newborns can experience intense and painful withdrawals when these medications are taken later in the pregnancy.

Paxil Maker Accused of Obscuring Suicide Risks

Category: Paxil Suicide

According to court documents recently released to U.S. lawyers seeking damages for clients allegedly harmed by the antidepressant medication, Paxil, drug manufacturers may have know about an increased risk of suicide associated with the medication as far back as 1989. GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Paxil, finally issued a warning for an increased risk of suicide in 2006. An analysis of early clinical trials for Paxil suggests that GSK employees included extra suicides in the placebo side of the trial to intentionally skew the results of the trial in favor of Paxil. The inappropriately included suicide data basically covered up the existence of an eight-fold increased risk of suicide.

Judge Rules For No Preemption In Paxil Cases

Category: Paxil News

This week a Pennsylvania judge ruled that federal law cannot preempt a state product liability lawsuit regarding GlaxoSmithKline's antidepressant Paxil. The ruling was centered on the alleged failure of GSK to warn patients and healthcare professionals about an increased risk of suicide associated with the medication. Judge Allan L. Tereshko concluded that federal preemption does not prohibit plaintiffs from arguing that the drug manufacturer failed to fulfill its obligation to those taking the medication when it failed to warn of an increased risk of suicidal ideation and action that has been linked to the drug.

Lawsuit Filed Over Paxil Related Birth Defects

Category: Paxil Birth Defects

In September of 2005 Faith Gibson of Canada gave birth to Meah, a beautiful baby girl. Meah was born with a hole in her heart, which required surgery and a seven-month hospital stay. Faith believed at the time that her daughter's condition was just an unfortunate happenstance, but last year after reading an article about birth defects associated with the prescription antidepressant Paxil she started to speculate that the Paxil she took during her pregnancy could have been responsible for Meah's terrible birth defect. In December of 2005, the same month Meah was born, the FDA issued a warning for an elevated risk of cardiovascular birth defects associated for the children of women taking Paxil during pregnancy. Faith is now launching a lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Paxil, alleging that the company failed to provide adequate safety information regarding the risks of taking Paxil during pregnancy.

Valentine's Day Massacre Reignites SSRI-Violence Debate

Category: Paxil Suicide

On February 14, 2008, Valentine's Day, Steven Kazmierczak opened fire on the campus of Northern Illinois University. Kazmeirczak managed to kill five and injure 17 others before turning the gun on himself. There is speculation as to what drove the 27-year old to commit such a heinous act, but some believe the violent episode could have been triggered by withdrawal symptoms from the popular antidepressant medication Prozac. Kazmeirczak's girlfriend claims that Steven quit taking Prozac about three weeks before the massacre. Some experts believe the intense withdrawal experienced by some when stopping selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) therapy could have been a major contributor to the violent actions that shocked the country earlier this month.

Senator Probes Paxil Suicide Cover-up

Category: Paxil Suicide

Senator Charles Grassley as part of an ongoing investigation of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and their questionable business practices has launched a probe on allegations that the company knew about suicide risks associated with Paxil some 15 years before a warning was added to the label. The pharmaceutical giant officially added warnings for increased suicidal behavior in young adults in 2006 but may have known about this link as far back as 1989. After reviewing dozens of internal documents, Dr. Joseph Glenmullen concluded that GSK improperly added reports of suicide to the placebo group of trial in order to create less of a disparity between the two groups.

New Study Says Antidepressants Are Not as Effective as Advertised

Category: Paxil News

A study published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine reports that 88 percent of clinical trials with negative results for antidepressant efficacy were either not reported to medical journals or were presented as positive findings. The study provides hard evidence of selective reporting, or the process of reporting good news while keeping negative findings out of the public eye. The study suggests that this selective reporting gives doctors a false perspective on the efficacy of antidepressants. Medical journal are seen as the "Holy Grail" for physicians and this exaggerated perspective can put patients at risk.

Suicide Warnings Increased Caution With Antidepressants

Category: Paxil News

A new study should help to silence critics claiming that suicide warnings on antidepressants caused thousands that could reap benefits from antidepressant medications, to stray away from the drugs due to the fear of suicidal thoughts and actions associated with them. The study says that this is not the case at all. As it turns out, since the warnings were placed on the labels of all antidepressants in 2004 there has not been a sharp drop-off as many have speculated, but rather slight decline in antidepressants prescribed to adolescents.

Court of Appeals Hears Pre-emption Arguments For Paxil

Category: Paxil Suicide

This week the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments that could play an pivotal role in the future of product liability litigation. The cases against GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the makers of the antidepressant Paxil, and Apotex, the makers of the generic version of the same drug, have been seen in opposite lights by two previous lower court judges. Both cases involve suicide warnings or lack thereof for these powerful antidepressants. The issue here is whether plaintiffs' lawsuits against these companies can be pre-empted due to approved labeling by the FDA.

Antidepressants May Play Role in Recent Massacres

Category: Side Effects

With crazed gunmen committing mass murders becoming more and more common these days it is probably time to really look for a cause of these actions. Many believe that prescription antidepressants other psychoactive drugs are to blame for these heinous acts. Just Sunday a man killed four in murderous rampage in two different Colorado cities. It is not yet clear whether the shooter was taking antidepressants or other medications, but if the traditional profile established by recent school shootings and mass murders holds true he was likely taking a mood-altering prescription medication.

Jury Hands Down Guilty Verdict in Nail Gun Trial

Category: Paxil News

The jury has found Richard Williams guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of his estranged wife Hendrika Williams. After a three-week trial it took the jury only seven hours to return the verdict of guilty. Williams was accused of shooting his then wife twice in the head and once in the heart with a high powered nail gun before turning the gun on himself. Williams' attorney claimed that his withdrawals from the antidepressant Paxil caused him to act out in such a violent manner. The jury was not as sympathetic as the defense had hoped for.

Seroxat Suffers Sue GlaxoSmithKline for £30 Million

British pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has been accused of misleading patients and covering up clinical studies that showed the dangers of their drug Seroxat, known as Paxil in the U.S. Attorneys on behalf of those who claim to be injured by this dangerous drug have filed over 600 writs with plans for more on the way. Each of these claims is seeking up to £50,000 in compensation. GlaxoSmithKline could easily be facing claims up to £30 million before all is said and done, still a drop in the bucket for a company that makes a billion pounds each year from Seroxat alone.

Increased Suicides in Returning Soldiers

Category: Paxil Suicide

Over the past few years there have been reports of an increase in suicides among veterans and particularly of those soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The most common explanation for these suicides is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Soldiers are often prescribed medication to help them cope with the often-traumatizing images and stress that has been placed on them during combat situations. Antidepressants have been found in some cases to increase suicidal ideation and increase the risk of suicide.

Defense Claims Paxil Withdrawal Played a Role in Murder

Category: Paxil News

The murder of Hendrika Williams fits the bill of a classic love triangle with a tragic ending. Richard Williams, her husband, allegedly murdered his wife in cold blood with a nail gun after finding out about a secret love affair she had been hiding. The alleged murder took place on October 22, 2005 when Williams shot his wife 3 times with a nail gun before turning the gun on himself. He allegedly shot her in the temple, loaded another nail (requiring 35 lbs of pressure), shot her in the back of the head, reloaded again, and finally shot her in the heart.

Women Not Warned About Paxil Birth Defects

Category: Paxil Birth Defects

A new study of more than half a million women who had taken selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like Paxil, found that almost half were not aware of serious birth defects associated with the medication. Women taking SSRIs are at particular risk of a life-threatening lung defect that occurs over six times more often in mothers taking antidepressants. This disorder is known as persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) and is characterized by the inability of the newborn to be able to adjust to breathing outside the womb. This is just one on many dangers associated with antidepressant use.

New Paxil Documentary to Air on IFC

Category: Paxil News

A new documentary about antidepressants is set to air on the Independent Film Channel on Monday night. The documentary is entitled, "Does Your Soul Have a Cold?" and focuses on depression and antidepressant use in Japan. This is a relatively new concept in eastern society and the title of the documentary was actually the slogan that GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Paxil, used when they first introduced their product to Japan. They used this slogan to give people a better conception of what it means to be depressed and therefore try antidepressants to help with it.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like Paxil and Zoloft are sited in a new study out of the UK, as doubling the risk of stomach bleeding. These same antidepressants combined with over the counter (OTC) pain medications like ibuprofen can sky rocket this risk to a six-fold increase. With over 10 million Americans using antidepressants and the common use of OTC ibuprofen like Motrin and Advil serious complications are possible.

Paxil Protest and GSK's Secrets

Category: Paxil News

The website that at one time was filled with a bulk of information on Paxil and the controversy that has surrounded the drug for years no longer exists. The site, PaxilProtest.com, is still there but no information appears, just a blank web page. Apparently the site went offline in 2006 by way of a "gag order" due to a settlement reached between manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline and the owner of the site. It seems rather odd that a company that had been completely honest about its clinical trial findings would be inclined to allegedly pay a small fortune to have a content like this removed. As it turns out they were not as honest as they claim to have been.
